Why can’t dreamers become instant doers? What is going on in our minds that stops us from pursuing our goals? But… what if I fail?
I come from a varied background. I don’t mean my ancestry, although that is somewhat varied too. I mean my parents are very different from each other. That being said, I appreciate the variety of traits that made me a dreamer, realist, organizer, over-thinker, free-spirit, creative, motivated, delusional optomist who is terrified of the risks, but really really wants the reward.
In the beginning I was just a girl with an idea. Hold up. I was a girl with a lot of ideas… and have had lots of ideas for as long as I could remember. Unfortunately the older I got, the more likely I was to leave my ideas in dream status… when they really should have been in execution status. Why does this happen to so many? Why are there more dreamers than doers?
Remember back to when you were little and the world hadn’t completely crushed your soul yet? I’m being dramatic. OK, you probably don’t remember, but long ago, when you were born, no one had limited you. No one told you that you weren’t smart enough or strong enough. No one told you that your idea didn’t make financial sense, or that you’re the only one that feels a certain way. No one also told you that rolling off the changing table would hurt, so you tried it. You hopefully were safely caught, but chances are, you weren’t all the time. Then one day your parents told you that you had to learn to walk, and it was HARD, but you kept trying and your parents kept pushing you because it was just something you had to do. You were AWFUL at it at first. You had to build muscles you didn’t even know you had, but you didn’t feel silly… you just kept trying until you mastered the skill. Quitting wasn’t an option.
What would happen if we all had the mindset of a baby? We would try everything and not care if we succeeded or failed. We’d probably have some financial issues and maybe even some legal troubles…. That might not be totally great, but I think you get my point. There are so many limiting beliefs that hold us back from accomplishing our goals. Maybe it’s the toddler mindset that we need. We know the rules, but still are ready to try it, just because we want to see what happens.
I challenge you to do something with the mindset of a toddler. Maybe you’re going to start working on your business plan without worrying about all the problems that haven’t even happened yet. Maybe you’ll go buy a present without worrying about dollar limits or having the right number of gifts… you’ll just buy something that the recipient would really like. Maybe you’ll go grocery shopping while waving “hi” to everyone and buying what you really want, not worrying about price or if the item might have a couple hundred calories more than your daily limit. Practice not letting limiting beliefs control your life and keep you stuck in the same place. Start today and remember to reflect on the rewards! You can do anything.
